Skincare can be confusing. There are hundreds of ingredients on the market, most of which are incredibly common and impressive. Before buying a new product, it's important to understand what different ingredients do, how they work, and what types of issues they can help with. So, we've broken down some of the most popular skincare ingredients, along with some of our own favorites, to help you navigate the world of ingredients.
Aloe Vera - Aloe vera is a commonly used plant extract ingredient that has soothing and calming properties, helps provide antioxidant benefits, and effectively moisturizes the skin.
Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) – AHAs are commonly used to improve the signs of aging, exfoliate the skin, and reduce uneven skin tone. However, it’s important to note that while AHAs are great for keeping skin clear and youthful, they can increase sensitivity to the sun, so sunscreen is essential when using this ingredient.
Amino Acids —Amino acids are known for their antioxidant and moisturizing properties. They're often combined with other restorative ingredients to combat signs of aging. Amino acids, found in our Volume Enhancing Foam, help strengthen, smooth, and condition hair for a more youthful look.
Benzoyl peroxide – This ingredient has been extensively researched and is considered one of the most effective over-the-counter acne treatments. It’s praised for its ability to penetrate hair follicles and kill acne-causing bacteria without causing many side effects.
Biotin – Biotin is a popular hair care vitamin that also contributes to overall skin health.
Ceramides – Ceramides replenish and repair the skin through their hydrating abilities and also help maintain skin hydration and skin barrier health.
Green Tea —Research indicates that green tea has numerous benefits for the skin, including anti-aging properties. Green tea belongs to the antioxidant class, known for its skin-soothing abilities and can help combat sun damage. Green tea is also a great ingredient for hair care, which is why it's found in our RevitaLash® Advanced Eyelash Repair & Thickening Serum, RevitaBrow® Advanced Brow Repair & Thickening Conditioner, and its protective and nourishing properties.
Hyaluronic Acid – Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it a fantastic moisturizer for all skin types.
Jojoba Oil — Jojoba oil, or wax, is extracted from the seeds of a perennial shrub and is rich in fatty acids. This emollient is known for its ability to enhance skin repair properties, making it an excellent solution for dry skin. Jojoba oil is also a beneficial ingredient for hair and can be found in our Thickening Shampoo, helping to strengthen the hair and scalp.
Niacinamide – Niacinamide is also known as B3. Known for its anti-aging benefits, this versatile ingredient is great for acne-prone skin and can also help improve the appearance of pores, uneven skin tone, dullness, and fine lines, making it a great ingredient for all skin types.
Panthenol —Panthenol is a humectant with the ability to retain moisture. This helps hydrate the skin, improving its appearance and feeling. Panthenol's moisturizing properties are ideal for hair, which is why we include it in some of our most popular formulas, like RevitaLash® Advanced Lash Repair and Volume Serum, RevitaBrow® Advanced Brow Repair and Volume Serum, and Double-Ended Volume Set, which help strengthen and condition lashes and brows.
Peptides —Peptides have been shown to soothe skin, improve wrinkles, firmness, and more. Peptides are also wonder ingredients for hair and can be found in many of our products, including our best-selling Double-Ended Volume Set, RevitaLash® Advanced Lash Repair and Volume Serum, RevitaBrow® Advanced Brow Repair and Volume Enhancing Foam to help strengthen and prevent breakage.
Retinol — Retinol is a well-known skincare ingredient, and for good reason. Also known as Vitamin A, Retinol is one of the best anti-aging ingredients, helping to smooth wrinkles, firm the skin, and even fight acne. It's a well-researched, highly effective all-rounder, but it should only be used under the supervision of a qualified dermatologist.
Salicylic Acid – Salicylic acid (also known as BHA) is considered one of the best ingredients for acne. It helps remove dead skin cells and clear pores by exfoliating the skin.
Shea Butter – Another great ingredient for addressing dry skin, shea butter has a rich, nourishing texture and is packed with antioxidants to help soothe and improve dry skin.
Vitamin E – Vitamin E is naturally present in healthy skin, but levels are often depleted by environmental exposure. Vitamin E provides antioxidant properties, helping to protect against environmental aggressors such as pollution and sun damage. Vitamin E is found in our Defining Liner Eyeliner, helping to condition the skin while providing antioxidant benefits.
